Scandinavian Efficiency in a Bishan 2-Room Flexi Flat

I had a chance to explore a small yet cleverly designed 2-room Flexi Flat in Bishan. This project caught my attention for its use of IKEA modular systems and Scandinavian influences. I will share the renovation story below, highlighting how every step merged functionality and warmth.

Scandinavian Efficiency in a Bishan 2-Room Flexi Flat

Nordic Breeze Studio proves that Scandinavian minimalism can transform tiny flats into spaces that encourage relaxation and support daily tasks. A thoughtful mix of IKEA products and creative planning made this home a model for efficient, stylish living in Singapore’s HDB landscape.

Location: 2-Room Flexi Flat, Bishan
Design Theme: Scandinavian minimalism with IKEA smart solutions
Key Features: Space-saving kitchen island, convertible zones, and light-enhancing finishes

The owner, a freelance designer, wanted a relaxing home that doubled as a workspace. The design team from RevoSpaces focused on Scandinavian-inspired ideas, with IKEA modules for budget-friendly efficiency.

Client Background & Pain Points

The homeowner led a busy lifestyle and needed an apartment that smoothly shifted between work mode and leisure. She mentioned three main challenges:

  1. Cramped Kitchen
The original 6 sqm layout felt tight. Counter space and cabinet storage fell short for her cooking needs.
  2. Visual Clutter
Old laminate finishes and large cabinets made the flat feel busy, restricting airflow and lighting.
  3. Multifunctional Needs
She needed a combined living area, workspace, and occasional guest sleeping spot, all in a small footprint.

After looking at sample layouts, the designer and homeowner decided to incorporate IKEA’s flexible systems. This approach would unify the apartment’s design, keep costs down, and bring Scandinavian calm into everyday life.

Renovation Plan & Design Approach

The RevoSpaces team had a dual strategy:

IKEA Core Systems

  • ENHET Base Units (matte white) for lower cabinets
  • MAXIMERA Full-Extension Drawers offering easy access without deep bending
  • EKBACKEN Concrete-Look Countertops to resist humidity
  • SKÅDIS Pegboards above prep areas for keeping utensils visible and organized

Scandinavian Spatial Tricks

  • White TREBY Blinds to diffuse natural light while maintaining privacy
  • FJÄLLBO Shelving used as a subtle divider that allowed airflow and light flow
  • IDÅSEN Foldable Desk to convert part of the living room into a home office when needed

These items worked together to open up the space and create practical zones.

Execution & Challenges Faced

Structural Adaptation

The design team encountered unusual wall angles. Standard IKEA cabinet widths measure about 60 cm, so they trimmed them to 55 cm. This allowed a snug fit against HDB’s irregular walls. They also used filler panels for a polished look.

Ventilation

The flat had a small kitchen, and odors could spread quickly. The team installed a hidden METOD range hood with ducting routed through the service yard. This solution reduced grease in the open living area.

Light Optimization

The owner needed sufficient illumination to do sketching and digital design. OMLOPP LED strips under floating shelves provided about 250 lux of task lighting. These strips also served as ambient lighting for evenings.

Key Highlights & Features

Kitchen Innovations

  • Retractable NÄVLINGE Island: This 45 cm deep island slid in or out, increasing prep space by about 40% when extended.
  • KUNGSFORS Rail System: Essential utensils hung within reach, freeing up countertop space.
  • Glass-Front FÖRVARA Containers: These showcased pantry staples, giving a neat, uniform look.

Living Zone

  • HEMNES Daybed: Tucked against the wall, it held storage under the cushions. This daybed changed into a guest bed when needed.
  • KALLAX Unit: It served as a partial wall to define the living area without blocking light. The homeowner used baskets in the shelves to hide clutter.

These touches confirmed that Scandinavian design could flourish in a smaller HDB environment.

Cost Breakdown

Here is a summary of the expenses in Singapore dollars:

CategoryEstimated Cost (SGD)
IKEA Cabinetry & Systems$7,800
Custom Modifications$2,200
Lighting & Ventilation$1,500
Labour & Installation$3,500
Total$15,000

To show the approximate percentage of each category (each “*” ~ 5% of the total):

  • IKEA Cabinetry & Systems: ********** (about 52%)
  • Custom Modifications: *** (about 15%)
  • Lighting & Ventilation: ** (about 10%)
  • Labour & Installation: **** (about 23%)

The overall spending was around $15,000, about 35% below the average cost for 2-room Flexi renovations in many central areas. Using pre-fabricated IKEA units drastically cut labor time, leaving only light carpentry and custom finishing.
